Don’t Forget the Gate

Why gates sag
Gates sag because they carry weight on moving hardware. If the frame is weak or the hinges are undersized, gravity wins every single time.
I have never met a bad gate that magically improved with age. They only get more annoying.
Frame it the right way
Build a sturdy rectangular frame and use a diagonal brace to resist sagging. Hardware should be sized for the gate’s weight, not just whatever came in a bargain bin pack.
A good fence gate framing plan makes the gate feel smooth from day one. A bad one turns opening the yard into a shoulder workout.
Match the shadowbox style
You can carry the same alternating picket look onto the gate so it blends with the rest of the fence. Just be careful that the board layout doesn’t interfere with latch or hinge clearance.
This is one of those details that separates a polished fence from a homemade-looking one.
Choose practical latches and hinges
Think about kids, pets, and daily use. A pet-safe fence design may need a secure latch, while a busy family yard might benefit from easier one-hand operation.
Pretty matters, but function matters more. In the next section, I’ll show you how to make the whole fence look gorgeous with stain, trim, and simple design upgrades.
