Bunny Ears Cactus (Opuntia microdasys)

I once made the absolute genius mistake of putting a gorgeous little Bunny Ears Cactus right on my low coffee table because it looked just like a soft, fuzzy plush toy. My young niece came over, thought it was an actual stuffed animal, and patted it before I could even scream “no!”
We spent the next two hours using school glue and tweezers to get hundreds of invisible needles out of her fingers, which taught me to never underestimate this deceptive little plant.
The Deceptive Velvet Texture
The Bunny Ears Cactus (Opuntia microdasys) gets its adorable name because the pads grow in pairs that look exactly like rabbit ears. Instead of long, scary needles, it is covered in thousands of tiny, velvety-looking clusters called glochids.
Don’t let that fuzzy appearance fool you, though, because those tiny hairs attach to your skin instantly if you brush against them. It stays beautifully small, usually maxing out around 2 to 3 feet tall, making it absolutely perfect for tight indoor or outdoor spaces.
Designing the Perfect Patio Display
Because this variety stays so beautifully petite, I highly recommend styling it in modern concrete bowls or minimalist terracotta pots on your patio table. It gives off a super chic, modern garden aesthetic that looks incredible next to clean outdoor furniture lines.
Give it tons of bright, full sun and use a super gritty cactus soil mix so it never sits in stagnant water. In the spring, you might even get lucky and see small, creamy yellow cup-shaped blossoms pop up right on the tips of the ears.
It is easily one of the most Instagram-worthy plants you can add to your collection, but if you want something with a completely different texture and a mind-blowing explosion of hot pink flowers, hit that next button below because the Beavertail Cactus is an absolute showstopper.
