How to Plan a Smooth, Natural-Looking Curve

Use a hose, rope, or extension cord to sketch the shape
This is my favorite trick for flexible layout design. Lay the hose down, step back, adjust it, and keep doing that until the curve feels right.
If it looks weird from one angle, it’s probably weird. I trust my eyes more than measurements at this stage.
Figure out trench width and depth
Your trench should be a bit wider than the brick and deep enough to allow for base material plus the brick height you want showing. Most people dig too shallow the first time.
I sure did. Then I wondered why my garden border ideas kept turning into wobbly little speed bumps.
Space gentle curves differently than tight curves
Sweeping curves are the easiest and most forgiving. Tight curves need more attention because each brick has to angle more sharply.
If you want that elegant sweep curve landscaping look, keep your turns broad and steady. It almost always looks more expensive too.
Avoid common layout mistakes
Don’t create a bunch of random wiggles just because curves are pretty. Too many small bends make a border look nervous.
Also, avoid sudden directional changes unless you’re matching a path or bed shape. In the next section, we’ll prep the ground the right way so your edging stays put, so hit the next button below.
