Common Mistakes, Seasonal Care, and Long-Term Maintenance

The biggest DIY errors
The most common issues are shallow trenches, weak base prep, and forcing curves that are too tight. Those three mistakes cause most of the wobble and uneven settling I see.
Another one is ignoring the surrounding grade. If water runs straight at your edging, it’s going to complain eventually.
Freeze-thaw weather can shift brick borders
In colder climates, repeated freeze-thaw cycles can nudge bricks upward or sideways. That’s where good drainage and even base depth really pay off.
This is the not-fun side of brick border maintenance, but it’s manageable. A small seasonal reset is usually all you need.
Quick seasonal touch-ups
Each spring, I walk the line, tap down any lifted bricks, top up mulch, and brush out debris. It takes way less time than rebuilding later.
That’s why I love low-maintenance landscaping ideas that are realistic, not fantasy. I want pretty, but I also want easy.
When to reset bricks and when to leave them alone
If a few bricks moved slightly, reset them. If the line still looks good and feels stable, leave it alone.
Not every imperfection is an emergency. In the next section, I’ll share budget tips and design upgrades that make a simple brick edge look custom, so hit the next button below.
