5. Upgrade to a Chunky, Well-Draining Soil Mix

I used to think soil was just dirt, so I once repotted a gorgeous ZZ using dense, heavy garden soil from my backyard. It turned into a literal brick of mud that trapped moisture for months, suffocating the poor thing completely.
When your houseplant lives in a low-light room, regular dirt is your worst enemy. You absolutely need a customized, highly breathable well-draining soil mix to keep things moving.
The Chunky Soil Recipe for Dark Rooms
To fix this, I started mixing my own custom blend that feels super chunky and light. My go-to recipe uses 50% standard potting mix, 25% perlite, and 25% orchid bark or pumice.
This specific mix ensures that excess water can slip right past the roots instantly instead of pooling around them. It leaves plenty of tiny air pockets in the container, which is exactly what a ZZ plant needs to survive the shadows.
How Aeration Keeps Rhizomes Alive
Those thick, potato-like underground rhizomes function just like camel humps, storing tons of water for emergencies. Because they are already packed with moisture, they absolutely hate sitting in wet, compacted dirt.
Giving them a loose houseplant soil blend provides excellent root aeration, allowing them to breathe even in a dim closet. Without those air pockets, the roots will quickly turn into mush, no matter how little you water them.
Getting the dirt mix right is a massive win, but all that beautiful drainage doesn’t mean a thing if your favorite pot doesn’t have a way to dump the extra water, so hit the next button below because we are tackling the non-negotiable pot rules next.
