How to Revive a Dying ZZ Plant Step-by-Step

I’ll never forget the rainy afternoon I spent sitting on my kitchen floor, surrounded by piles of muddy dirt, literally crying over a rotting houseplant. I was trying to scrub a completely hollow, mushy bulb with an old toothbrush, totally convinced I could magically save it.

It was a messy, heartbreaking lesson, but it taught me exactly how to perform real emergency plant surgery. If your plant is actively failing, we need to skip the wishful thinking and pull it out of the pot right now.

The Rhizome Rescue Mission

First, gently tip your drooping ZZ plant out of its container and shake away the old, soggy soil so you can see what’s happening underneath. You are looking for the rhizomes, which should look like firm, healthy little potatoes.

If they feel soft, slimy, or smell like a swamp, you’ve hit a bad case of rhizome rot. Take a sharp pair of scissors, wipe them down with rubbing alcohol, and boldly snip away any mushy tissue until only the clean, white parts remain.

Repotting and Aftercare for Recovery

Once your clean rhizomes have air-dried for a few hours, it’s time to move them into a fresh, breathable terracotta pot filled with brand-new, bone-dry soil. Make sure the new pot is only an inch or two wider than the root ball, because too much extra space holds onto unnecessary water.

After repotting, do absolutely nothing. Resist the urge to water it for at least a week or two, giving those fresh surgical cuts on the roots time to fully callous over and heal.
