Why I Stopped Using Mulch and Switched to Permanent Brick Borders

Choosing the Right Brick Style for Your Garden

Brick edging styles for gardens including reclaimed brick, pavers, and soldier course flower bed borders

Reclaimed vs new brick

I love recycled brick landscaping when I can find good material.
It brings warmth, a little character, and that slightly timeworn charm I’m a sucker for.

New edging bricks and pavers are easier to source and more uniform.
That makes them great for cleaner, more formal layouts.

Color and texture matter

Brick should connect to your house, path, or patio if possible.
That doesn’t mean it has to match perfectly, but it should look related.

For front yard border ideas, I usually like earthy reds, browns, and soft charcoal tones.
They tend to play nicely with plants and don’t scream for attention.

Layout changes the vibe

A brick soldier course border feels upright and classic.
Flat-laid bricks feel more subtle and easier to mow along.

For pathway border bricks or tighter curves, smaller units can be easier to work with.
And if your garden already has a lot going on, keep the border simple so it doesn’t compete.

I learned the hard way that the prettiest brick still fails if the install is sloppy. Hit the next button below, because the basic setup work matters more than the brick itself.
