Why I Stopped Using Mulch and Switched to Permanent Brick Borders

Is a Permanent Brick Border Right for You?

Comparing permanent brick borders and mulch to choose the best low maintenance garden edging option

Brick is a great fit if you want structure

If you love tidy garden beds, strong definition, and a more polished landscape, brick is worth a serious look.
It’s especially good for edging for foundation beds, front walkways, and high-visibility planting zones.

If you’re tired of replacing mulch and cleaning up scattered bark, this can feel like a breath of fresh air.
That was definitely my experience.

Mulch may still be smarter in some spots

If you’re planting a large woodland bed, building soil fast, or gardening on a tiny budget, mulch still has value.
The same goes for vegetable beds and newly planted areas that need root-zone protection.

And if you rent, move often, or enjoy changing your layout, a permanent edge may feel too fixed.
That’s not a flaw, just a different goal.

Ask yourself a few honest questions

Do you want a low maintenance garden bed, or do you just want a fresh look this season?
Do you prefer soft, naturalistic beds, or do you love a crisp formal garden border?

For me, switching to permanent brick borders was about time, effort, and sanity as much as style.
I wanted a yard that looked finished without asking me to redo the same job every spring.

If that sounds like you, brick might be your move too.
