Cost Up Front vs Cost Over Time

The upfront price is real
Let’s not pretend otherwise.
A brick border installation costs more upfront than grabbing a few bags of mulch.
If you DIY, you’ll still need brick, base material, a shovel, a level, and probably more patience than you expected.
If you hire it out, labor can become the biggest line item.
Recurring mulch costs add up
Mulch feels cheaper because it’s spread out.
But yearly material costs, delivery, and refresh labor stack up over time.
When I added up a few seasons of mulch replacement, plus my own time, brick started looking less expensive emotionally and financially.
And yes, I count “emotional cost” now because I’m older and wiser and a little dramatic.
Long term, brick made sense for me
In high-visibility beds, brick became the better value.
Especially in front yard areas where I wanted a long lasting garden edging solution.
That doesn’t mean brick wins everywhere.
It means brick wins where permanence, neatness, and lower repeat labor matter most.
The trick is choosing the right kind of brick so it fits your house and doesn’t look clunky. Hit the next button below, because style choices can make or break the whole project.
