Why I Stopped Using Citronella Candles (And the One Stealthy Alternative I Use Instead)

Citronella Candles vs. My New Setup

citronella candles vs heat-activated mosquito repellent device for backyard mosquito control

Smell and smoke

Citronella candles smell stronger and often add some smoke. My current mosquito repellent device is much lighter on both.

If you’re eating outdoors, that difference is huge. Nobody wants their fruit plate tasting faintly like repellent.

Coverage and convenience

Candles can help a little in a very small, still space. My new setup gives me more reliable patio mosquito protection in the areas where people actually sit.

Convenience-wise, it’s not even close. I turn it on and move on with my life.

Cost over time

Candles can seem cheaper at checkout. But if you keep buying several for every event, the math gets sneaky fast.

A device with refills may cost more upfront, but it often feels more efficient per use. That’s especially true if your old system was “buy three candles and hope.”

When I still use candles

I’m not anti-candle. I still use one sometimes for mood lighting.

I just don’t treat it like my main mosquito repellent for patio nights anymore. Hit the next button below, because the setup around the repellent matters almost as much as the repellent itself.
