Why I Stopped Using Citronella Candles (And the One Stealthy Alternative I Use Instead)

Who Should Still Use Citronella Candles

People who want ambiance first

If your main goal is cozy light and a summery scent, citronella candles still make sense. They can absolutely be part of a pretty backyard hosting setup.

I just think of them as decor with a possible side benefit, not a primary defense system.

Small sheltered spaces may do better

On a tiny, covered balcony with very little wind, they may help more than they do in an open yard. Environment really matters.

So if you love them, I’m not here to snatch the candle from your hand. I’m just saying expectations should match reality.

They can complement other methods

I think candles work best as part of a layered setup. Pair them with airflow, standing water prevention, and a stronger stealth mosquito repellent if bugs are a regular problem.

That combo makes way more sense than asking one little flame to defend a whole dinner party.

I still understand the appeal

They’re familiar, attractive, and easy to find. I bought them for years for a reason.

But once I separated “pretty” from “effective,” my choices got better. Hit the next button below, because here’s my honest bottom line after all the trial and error.

What do you think?
