A Final Planning Checklist Before You Build

Decide the must-haves first
Choose your target size, depth, style, and whether the pool is mainly for cooling off, soaking, visual impact, or all three. Then decide how much of the yard must stay open for dining, play, or planting.
If you skip that step, every later choice gets harder. Been there, hated that.
Lock the order of operations
Start with site analysis, then code research, then concept layout, then contractor or engineering input, then pricing. After that, move into permits, construction planning, utilities, and planting design.
That order saves money and prevents rework. It also keeps you from buying gorgeous materials before you know what your site can support.
Ask every contractor these questions
Ask how they handle filtration in small spaces, overflow routing, service access, winterizing, noise control, and slip resistance. Also ask what maintenance the system really needs in year one.
If someone gets vague here, I pay attention. Fast talk is not a filtration strategy.
Use this mini checklist
- Confirm pool zoning regulations
- Measure true usable square footage
- Track sun and debris patterns
- Choose raised, sunken, or hybrid build
- Decide on biofilter system type
- Pick compact low-maintenance pool plants
- Plan privacy and safety
- Price materials and access costs
- Confirm seasonal care needs
- Get written scope from pros
If you’ve made it this far, you’re already ahead of most people.
