Seasonal Care for Four-Season Urban Gardens

Spring startup
In spring, trim dead plant material, inspect liners or shells, restart pumps, and flush or check filter zones. This is also when I top up gravel areas, divide overgrown marginals, and make sure water is actually moving where it should.
A lazy spring opening tends to create a cranky summer. Ask me how I know.
Summer maintenance
Summer is about skimming, checking water clarity, managing evaporation, and watching nutrient buildup. Hot spells can stress small water volumes faster, especially in reflected heat from walls or paving.
In warmer markets like Dallas-Fort Worth or Atlanta, I’d be extra alert to heat and algae pressure. In milder Seattle-Tacoma conditions, debris and shade balance may be the bigger issue.
Fall cleanup
Leaf drop is the enemy of a tiny pool. Use nets, keep surfaces clean, and remove decaying material before it sinks and feeds muck.
This matters a ton in cities with lots of street trees and compact yards. One windy week can undo a month of good maintenance.
Winterizing for colder cities
In places like New York, Chicago, Minneapolis-St. Paul, and Detroit, winterizing is not optional. Protect pumps, manage water levels appropriately for your build type, and follow installer guidance for freeze protection and shut-down procedures.
The seasons will absolutely test your design. Hit the next button below, because next I’m covering the mistakes that quietly ruin small natural pools even when the ideas looked great on paper.
