13. Install Horizontal Hortonova Netting Supports

The Heavy Bloom Domino Effect
A couple of years ago, my tightly packed zinnia bed was having its absolute best season ever right up until mid-August. Then, a massive summer thunderstorm rolled through while I was out running errands.
Because my plants were completely loaded with those giant, water-logged summer blooms, they became incredibly top-heavy in the rain. When the wind hit, they basically acted like giant dominoes, crashing right into each other and snapping stems everywhere.
I lost almost my entire crop for flower arranging in a single afternoon because they simply didn’t have the structural support to hold themselves upright. It turns out that when you pack zinnias this close together, they naturally rely on each other for balance, which is incredibly dangerous in bad weather.
The Invisible Grid Secret
Now, I completely prevent this disaster by installing a secret, totally invisible layer of structural support incredibly early in the season. I use a cheap, horizontal layer of white plastic Hortonova netting stretched tightly across four simple wooden corner stakes.
The absolute key to keeping your flower garden layout looking natural is putting this net down when your seedlings are only about a foot tall. As the plants shoot upward, they just naturally grow straight through the little square holes in the mesh without getting tangled.
By the time your plants actually start blooming, that ugly plastic netting is completely swallowed up and hidden by the dense, bushy foliage. It creates this incredibly strong, floating grid that literally catches those heavy flower heads before they ever have a chance to flop over into the dirt.
Getting those gorgeous blooms perfectly supported means you finally have the heavy lifting totally out of the way, but keeping this massive floral engine running smoothly until the autumn frost requires one last mindset shift, so hit the next button below to dive into my final thoughts on managing this wild backyard display!
