Hack #1: Remove Standing Water Like a Detective

Hunt for Hidden Breeding Spots
Mosquitoes can breed in shockingly small amounts of water. Check plant saucers, kiddie toys, clogged gutters, tarps, wheelbarrows, birdbaths, buckets, and folded patio furniture.
I always tell people to walk the yard with a “what could hold water?” mindset. It sounds dramatic, but it works.
Check More Than Once
Do one sweep 5 to 7 days before your event, then another the day before. That second check matters after rain, sprinkler runoff, or one of those weird humid nights where everything feels damp.
If you’re hosting in cities like Atlanta, Dallas-Ft. Worth, DC, or Philadelphia, summer humidity can make mosquito pressure feel extra intense.
Use BTI Where Water Can’t Be Dumped
If you’ve got a pond, rain barrel, or drainage area that can’t be emptied, mosquito dunks or BTI mosquito control can help target larvae. They’re commonly used for water sources where dumping isn’t practical.
That said, I still treat BTI as a support tool, not an excuse to ignore standing water everywhere else. Hit the next button below, because airflow is one of the easiest tricks in the whole article.
