Mistake #2: Forgetting About Gutters and Downspouts

Clogged Gutters Create Mosquito Nurseries
Leaves, roof grit, and shingle debris trap water in gutters. That stagnant water becomes a perfect mosquito breeding site, especially during mosquito season.
This one gets missed because it’s not eye-level. Out of sight, out of mind, and meanwhile the mosquitos are throwing a pool party above your porch.
Poor Drainage Around Downspouts
Even if gutters look okay, downspouts can dump water into the same soggy spot every time it rains. Splash blocks shift, soil dips, and suddenly you’ve got yard drainage issues.
I’ve seen one bad downspout turn a side yard into a repeat mosquito hot spot. It doesn’t take much.
What to Inspect
Check for standing water in gutters, loose downspout joints, muddy patches, and puddling near the foundation. Also look for low areas where runoff keeps collecting.
If you use a rain barrel, make sure it’s properly sealed or screened. An open top is basically an engraved invitation.
Simple Fixes That Matter
Clean gutters regularly, extend downspouts if needed, and regrade small low spots. If water always pools in one area, fix the drainage instead of hoping the sun handles it.
And yep, water management leads right into another really common issue. Hit the next button below, because overwatering the lawn can quietly keep your whole yard mosquito-friendly.
