I love a good front yard makeover because it does not have to cost a fortune to look polished. One of my favorite tricks is using brick lawn edging to frame beds, sharpen lines, and make the whole yard feel planned on purpose.
A great brick border can make basic mulch look expensive. It can also help with flower bed definition, keep grass from creeping, and give your landscaping that finished, designer look so many of us are chasing in 2026.
How to Choose the Right Brick Edging Pattern for Your Yard

Match the Pattern to Your Home Style
I always start with the house, not the bricks. A soldier course edging or running bond brick edging looks right at home with traditional, colonial, and brick ranch houses, while a zigzag brick edging or mixed layout feels more playful on cottages and casual homes.
If your place already has strong lines, go more structured. If your beds are soft and curvy, a gentler pattern like a curved brick edging or scalloped border usually feels way less forced.
Decide on Straight Lines or Curves
Straight borders are easier to install and usually cheaper. Curves look softer and more custom, but wow, they can test your patience if your trench wanders even a little.
I’ve learned this the annoying way. If I’m edging a long front yard brick border near a walkway, I usually go straight or slightly curved so the whole thing still feels clean.
Pick Brick Type, Size, and Color
For a crisp look, use uniform landscape edging bricks in one tone. For more character, try mixed-tone brick border ideas or reclaimed brick landscaping if you like that older, lived-in charm.
I also like to think about contrast. Red brick against dark mulch pops, while tan or buff brick can blend into low-maintenance landscaping with a softer look.
Plan the Base Before You Build
Pretty patterns fail fast if the base is sloppy. A compacted trench with paver base preparation, decent drainage, and sometimes polymeric sand for pavers makes a huge difference.
If you live where winters are rough, think about frost heave landscaping issues before you lay a single brick. In the next section, hit the next button below because I’m starting with the easiest classic pattern of them all.
