Foam-Free Mechanics That Hold Heavy Hydrangeas in Place

Taped Grid for Beginners
A taped grid vase is the easiest place to start. Use clear floral tape across the opening in a simple crisscross pattern.
This gives each stem its own lane. It’s not fancy, but it works shockingly well.
When Chicken Wire Works Better
Chicken wire mechanics are better for fuller pieces with lots of stems. Shape a loose ball, place it in the vase, and secure it if needed with floral tape.
Don’t pack it too tight. Stems need room to slide in and still reach the water.
Using a Flower Frog
A flower frog or pin frog is perfect for low, artistic arrangements. It gives precise placement and is reusable, which I love for low-waste flowers.
This is my favorite trick for a modern centerpiece. It makes even a small bouquet look intentional.
Natural Armatures
Twigs, curly willow, or sturdy greenery can create a branch armature that helps support blooms naturally. This also adds texture before you even place the flowers.
In the next section, I’ll show you how to build the base layer first, because that’s the secret to a bouquet that doesn’t slump on one side.
