Choosing the Right Brick for Lawn Edging

Not all brick belongs outdoors
This trips people up constantly. Standard wall brick can absorb too much water and crack when exposed to weather.
For brick lawn edging, I prefer clay pavers or outdoor-rated brick designed for ground contact and freeze-thaw conditions.
Look for weather resistance
If you live in a cold climate, this matters a lot. Freeze-thaw resistant pavers or SW-rated brick hold up much better over time.
That’s especially important in cities with winter swings and wet springs. A pretty bargain brick isn’t a bargain if it starts flaking in two years.
Pick a style that fits your yard
This is the fun part. Salvaged brick edging looks warm and charming, while sleek pavers lean more modern landscape edging.
For a classic front yard, I love a flat-laid brick row. For a more decorative look, soldier course or angled layouts can be beautiful, but they’re not always as mower-friendly.
Think about orientation before buying
A brick laid flat creates a wider, more stable edge. Upright brick can look elegant, but it usually needs tighter installation and a stronger lock-in strategy.
I always tell people to choose function first, then style. Up next, I’ll show you how to plan the line before you touch a shovel, because a bad layout can ruin even the best materials, so hit the next button below.
