DIY System 6: Use a Skimmer-to-Biofalls Circulation Loop

This is one of the smartest hybrid systems for a busy backyard. A pool skimmer grabs floating debris, then water runs through filtration and returns through biofalls or a small waterfall.
Pair skimming with oxygenation
Skimmers remove leaves, pollen, bugs, and oily surface film fast. The waterfall return adds movement and oxygen, which supports cleaner water and a healthier microbial environment.
I like this combo because it gives instant visual feedback. If the falls are flowing nicely, I know the loop is doing its job.
Make the waterfall functional and pretty
A waterfall shouldn’t be a random rock pile plopped on the edge. Hide plumbing, create a natural spill pattern, and size the drop so it sounds soothing, not like a dump truck unloading gravel.
Even a modest spillway can look gorgeous. It also encourages better gas exchange than a flat pipe return.
Choose the pump carefully
A variable-speed pump is a great match here because you can run gentle circulation most of the day. Then you can raise flow after parties, storms, or hot spells when the system needs a little extra help.
Oversized pumps waste energy and can blast through planted zones too fast. More flow is not always more clean.
Watch the noise and splash
Too much splash means water loss, especially in hot, dry stretches. Keep the return close enough to the surface to reduce evaporation while still giving you that satisfying movement.
This loop is strong, but some yards need a slimmer planted edge. Click the next button below, because the reed bed wall is perfect when you want serious root filtration without giving up floor space.
