The Tools and Materials You’ll Wish You Had From the Start

Must-have basics
At minimum, I want a spade, hand tamper, level, tape measure, string, stakes, and a rubber mallet for pavers.
You’ll also want paver base, leveling sand, gloves, and a broom for cleanup. These aren’t glamorous, but they do the heavy lifting.
Nice extras that save time
A garden cart, knee pad, masonry chisel, and landscape marking paint help a lot.
If you’re cutting brick, renting the right saw can turn a frustrating day into a manageable one. I’m all for budget DIY, but not when I’m fighting the wrong tool for two hours.
Safety gear gets skipped too often
Wear gloves, eye protection, and sturdy shoes.
Brick chips are sharp, dust is irritating, and dropped pavers do not care about your toes. Ask me how I know. Actually, don’t.
Don’t forget finishing materials
Depending on the design, you may also use polymeric sand, mulch, gravel, or weed barrier alternatives around the edge.
Those final materials help stabilize the look and cut down on maintenance. Of course, by the time you gather all this stuff, the budget starts looking very real, so hit the next button below.
