Why I Stopped Putting Hydrangeas in Clear Vases (And What I Use Instead)

Mistakes I Still See All the Time

common hydrangea arrangement mistakes including wrong vase shape leaves in water and direct sun

Using the wrong vase shape

A vase that’s too narrow can choke thick stems. A vase that’s too wide can make everything collapse outward.

And a vase that’s too light? That’s how you end up catching a bouquet mid-fall while saying words your kids should not hear.

Leaving leaves below the water

This one is so common. Submerged leaves break down quickly and dirty the water fast.

If you care about floral preservative performance, clean stems matter just as much as the packet does.

Displaying hydrangeas in bad spots

Direct sun, hot windows, and vents are rough on hydrangeas. Same with placing them near stoves or electronics that give off heat.

This is extra important in apartments or smaller homes where room temps swing more than you realize.

Cutting blooms at the wrong stage

Very immature blooms can wilt quickly indoors. For garden cut flowers, I usually choose blooms that feel a little firmer and more developed.

Make these fixes and your arrangements improve fast. In the final section, I’ll tell you exactly what I use instead now and when I still break my own rule, so hit the next button below.
