My Step-by-Step Method for Arranging Hydrangeas Indoors

I condition the stems first
Before styling, I let freshly cut stems rest in cool water for a bit. If they came from the garden, I bring them inside fast so they don’t lose moisture.
This small step really improves hydrating hydrangea stems before arranging.
I recut and strip the lower leaves
I always use a sharp pruner and do a fresh stem recut technique at an angle. Then I remove any leaves that would sit below the water line.
That keeps the water cleaner and reduces bacterial buildup. It’s boring advice, but wow, it matters.
I fill the vessel generously
Hydrangeas are not the flower to half-water. I give them a deep drink and check the level again a few hours later.
For DIY flower arrangement success, spacing matters too. I leave enough room for airflow so the heads don’t crush each other.
I style with shape in mind
I start with the largest bloom as an anchor. Then I add supporting blooms around it until the arrangement feels balanced, not stuffed.
I used to overpack hydrangeas because I thought “more” looked lush. Usually it just looked stressed. In the next section, I’ll share how I keep them fresh longer after arranging, so hit the next button below.
