The Cottage-Style Layered Front Bed

Start with a soft backbone
For a cottage garden front yard, hydrangeas act like the fluffy backbone of the bed.
I usually place them in the mid-back layer, then weave in perennials around them so the whole thing feels relaxed, not rigid.
Add bloom-heavy companions
This is where hydrangea companion plants shine.
I love pairing them with salvia, catmint, coneflower, yarrow, and a few airy grasses for movement and long bloom windows.
Balance romance with structure
Too many floppy flowers can turn into visual chaos fast.
So I always add a little evergreen structure or repeated foliage plants to keep that dreamy look from turning into what I call “cute chaos,” which, whew, I have absolutely created before.
Keep it tidy in a small yard
In a tiny front space, limit yourself to a tighter color palette and repeat plants instead of collecting one of everything.
If you like that lush feeling but want something more polished, hit the next button below because the modern white-hydrangea layout is clean, crisp, and seriously stunning.
