The Right Water, Vase, and Room Setup

Best water temperature
I use cool water, not icy and not warm. For most cold water flowers like hydrangeas, cool water helps keep things calm and hydrated.
Super warm rooms and warm water together are not your friend. Hydrangeas already have enough drama without that combo.
How deep the water should be
I like a decent water level, especially at first. These are thirsty blooms, and generous hydration helps support fresh cut hydrangeas during the first day or two.
If the vase is too shallow, the stems can’t drink enough. I check the level more often than I do with many other flowers.
Where to place the vase
Keep it out of direct sun, away from heating vents, and far from hot windows. Cool room flower storage overnight can also help extend life, especially in summer.
I also keep hydrangeas away from fruit bowls. Ripening fruit gives off ethylene gas, and ethylene exposure flowers don’t love that.
Why environment matters
Even a perfect stem prep can get wrecked by a bad spot on the counter. A bouquet on a sunny island next to the toaster is basically doomed, bless it.
So yes, location matters more than people think. Hit the next button below, because the day-to-day care is what gets you from “pretty for three days” to “still gorgeous next week.”
