Best Essential Oils for Repelling Mosquitoes

The top oils I reach for
My favorite blend includes citronella essential oil, lavender, geranium, and cedarwood. Those are common in essential oil bug spray recipes because they have the classic scent profile mosquitoes seem to dislike.
Some people also use lemongrass, peppermint, or patchouli. I keep peppermint lower because it can feel intense on skin.
Smell versus performance
Here’s the truth: the prettiest-smelling oil is not always the one you’ll want outside at dusk. Citronella is not exactly perfume-counter glamorous, but it’s a workhorse in outdoor blends.
I usually soften it with lavender or geranium so the spray smells more garden-fresh and less tiki torch.
Why blends often work better
A blend tends to smell more balanced and can cover more scent notes. That matters because mosquitoes key in on a mix of body odors, heat, and carbon dioxide, so a layered aroma can be more practical than one-note lavender oil mosquito repellent alone.
Also, single-oil sprays can get boring fast. If I’m going to reapply all evening, I want something I don’t hate.
A very important lemon eucalyptus note
Lemon eucalyptus essential oil is not the same thing as oil of lemon eucalyptus products standardized for PMD. Commercial OLE repellents have evidence behind them, while plain essential oil doesn’t equal that same performance.
So please don’t swap one for the other and assume identical protection. Next, hit the next button below, because the base you use can make your spray feel silky, sticky, useless, or somewhere in between.
