Gather the Tools You’ll Need for a Smooth Weekend Project

Basic tools you probably already own
You’ll likely need a shovel, hand trowel, tape measure, work gloves, level, broom, and a bucket. A rubber mallet installation setup is especially helpful for tapping bricks into place without cracking them.
If you have a tamper, great. If not, you can still make it work on a smaller project with patience.
Optional tools that make life easier
A hand tamper, landscape edging spade, and mason’s line make the job faster. For long borders, a line level or compact torpedo level helps keep everything neat.
If you’re cutting pavers, you may need a masonry chisel or saw. For a true under-$100 build, I’d avoid lots of cuts if possible.
Don’t skip safety gear
Wear gloves, closed-toe shoes, and eye protection if you’re cutting or chipping brick. Dust masks are smart if you’re handling dry sand or old materials.
I know safety reminders sound boring, but smashing your thumb with a paver because you were “just doing one quick tap” is, wow, humbling.
Prep your workspace before Saturday morning
Set your bricks near the bed, gather tools in one spot, and mark utility lines if needed. A little prep saves so much stop-and-start frustration.
This is also when I fill a water bottle and put on sunscreen, because DIY confidence does not protect against sunburn. Hit the next button below, because now we’re getting into the part that really decides whether your border stays put or shifts by next month.
