ZZ Plant Care On A Lazy Schedule: How To Keep It Thriving Over Winter

Light and Temperature Adjustments for Low-Energy Months

A ZZ plant placed in low indirect sunlight inside a stylish boho home decor living room during the cold months.

Last winter, I shoved my absolute biggest ZZ plant right up against our bedroom window thinking it needed every single ray of weak morning sunshine. Big mistake—a sneaky, freezing draft from the old window frame completely chilled the poor thing, and it looked miserable for weeks.

Catching the Perfect Winter Light

During these darker months, the sun sits much lower in the sky and doesn’t pack the same punch as it does in July.

While indirect sunlight is the gold standard for these guys, you can actually move them a little closer to a south or west-facing window during winter.

They love being a part of your boho home decor, but just make sure they are about two to three feet away from the actual glass pane.

If your apartment gets incredibly dark, don’t panic because these are famously low light indoor plants that can handle a gloomy corner without throwing a fit.

Beating the Indoor Climate Hazards

The real danger in the winter isn’t actually the lack of sun, but our indoor heating systems.

Blasting the furnace creates harsh, dry indoor air and nasty hot drafts that can crisp up your plant’s beautiful foliage faster than you think.

Keep your green bestie far away from heating vents, radiators, and fireplaces to avoid cooking the roots.

They thrive best in a cozy ambient temperature between 65°F and 75°F, which is usually exactly where we keep our thermostats anyway.

And honestly, dealing with the indoor air is only half the battle, so click that next button below because I need to show you a super weird trick involving a damp cloth that completely unlocks their winter survival mode.

What do you think?
