Silent Symptoms of ZZ Plant Root Rot

I remember thinking my own ZZ was just throwing a tiny, harmless temper tantrum when a single lower leaf turned pale yellow. I completely ignored it until an entire thick stalk literally slid out of the soil right into my hand during a routine dusting.
It was an absolute horror movie moment for a plant lover, and it taught me that you have to watch these guys like a hawk. Let’s talk about the sneaky root rot symptoms so you don’t get the same nasty surprise I did.
The Subtle Early Warning Signs
The first thing you will notice is that those famously shiny, glossy leaves start looking incredibly dull, almost like they are covered in a thin layer of chalky dust. If you look closely at the base of the plant, you might also spot subtle wrinkling along the lower stems.
Another classic giveaway is when you notice random yellow leaves on a ZZ plant showing up out of nowhere, usually starting near the bottom of the stalk. This happens because the drowning roots can no longer pull up nutrients, forcing the plant to abandon its oldest foliage.
Late-Stage Red Flags and the Smell Test
If things get worse, those firm green stalks will transform into soggy, mushy stems that lean over dramatically like they are completely exhausted. At this point, the underground soil will emit a distinct, sour or swampy odor that smells exactly like rotting vegetables.
If you give a gentle tug to a yellowing stem and it pulls completely free from the potting mix with zero resistance, the tissue underneath has already dissolved. Don’t panic just yet if your plant is showing these scary signs, because we can still play rescue medic.
