Step-by-Step Guide to Planting Dahlia Tubers
I will never forget my second year of growing when I got so overly eager in early April that I threw my dahlia tubers into the dirt during a random warm weekend. A massive late freeze hit right after, and because I had watered them heavily thinking I was helping, they completely turned to ice and rotted.
Learning exactly when and how to place these in the ground makes all the difference between an empty bed and a backyard paradise.
Getting the Timing and Soil Warmth Right
You absolutely must wait until the danger of the final spring frost has completely passed for your area. Your raised bed gardening soil needs to reach a consistent soil temperature of about 60°F before these tropical beauties feel safe waking up.
If the dirt still feels freezing cold to your bare hands, it is way too early, so keep those tubers tucked away in the garage for just a little bit longer!
Perfect Depth and Proper Tuber Orientation
When your soil is finally warm enough, dig a hole that allows for a strict planting depth of about 4 to 6 inches deep.
Pay close attention to the tuber orientation when placing it in the ground; you want to lay the tuber completely flat on its side with the “eye” or tiny green sprout pointing directly upward toward the sky.
