12 Surprising Household Items That Double as Emergency Mosquito Repellent

Cinnamon Sticks or Ground Cinnamon

How cinnamon can be used

Cinnamon sticks or a little ground cinnamon can be placed in bowls, sachets, or warm-water setups near entryways and seating areas. The strong scent may help make a small zone less appealing to mosquitoes.

This is another one I like for porch tables because it looks intentional instead of desperate. That is a real design category in my house, by the way.

Where it works best

Try cinnamon near side tables, patio corners, windows, or door thresholds. It’s one of those porch mosquito hacks that feels subtle but can contribute to a larger scent barrier.

I wouldn’t rely on it for a long yard gathering. I would use it during a quick evening chat on the stoop.

Important caution

Skip concentrated cinnamon oil unless you really know what you’re doing. Pantry cinnamon is one thing, but strong oils can irritate skin badly and should never be casually swapped in.

That’s a lesson I learned after one overenthusiastic DIY phase years ago. My notes from that period should just say, calm down and dilute things.

The next item is stronger and needs more caution, so hit the next button below because menthol scent mosquito deterrent tricks can help in tiny doses only.
