2. Create a Horizontal Slat Fence From Reclaimed Boards

Why horizontal lines feel modern
A horizontal pallet fence instantly gives a yard that modern rustic fence vibe. The long lines visually stretch the space, which is why this look is huge for small yard privacy ideas and narrow city backyards.
I love this style for homes that already lean contemporary, farmhouse, or simple cottage-modern. It reads cleaner than a rough vertical patchwork.
Pull boards and space them evenly
Instead of using whole pallets, remove the boards and fasten them to rails. A consistent gap of 1/2 inch to 1 inch gives you that breezy wood privacy screen look while still blocking most sightlines.
If you want more privacy, tighten the spacing. If you want more air movement, especially in hot or humid spots, leave a little more breathing room.
Mix board widths for a custom look
One of my favorite tricks is using mixed-width wood fencing. Pair narrow slats with a few wider boards, and suddenly your budget fence starts looking like something from a designer backyard reveal.
Just don’t make it random-random. Repeat the pattern every few boards so it feels intentional.
Finish for a sleek modern-rustic vibe
Mid-tone walnut, soft black, and weathered cedar stains are still winning for 2026-style outdoor spaces. If your reclaimed lumber already has pretty gray patina, a clear exterior wood sealer can keep the character without hiding it.
Up next, I’m getting into the fence style I use when neighbors are way too close and I want maximum privacy without making the yard feel dead. Hit the next button below for that one.
