I Tried the $1.50 Fence Picket Hack: Here’s How My Backyard Looks One Year Later

Maintenance, Repairs, and Upkeep Over 12 Months

What routine care looked like

I gave it a light cleaning a few times during the year, mostly after pollen season and after a stretch of wet weather. A soft brush and mild soap handled most of it.

I also checked screws and connection points every few months. That took maybe ten minutes, tops.

The easy fixes

The easiest repair was touching up the finish where sun exposure caused fading. I also tightened one area that loosened slightly after repeated rain and dry cycles.

These were simple, low-drama fixes. Nothing required taking the whole thing apart, thank goodness.

The annoying parts

The most annoying upkeep was dealing with debris collecting near the base. Leaves, wet mulch, and splashed soil are not your friends if you care about outdoor wood maintenance.

I learned fast that airflow matters just as much after the build as during it. Keeping the bottom edge clean made a real difference.

Did upkeep still feel affordable?

Yes. It still felt like one of the better budget backyard privacy screen ideas because the maintenance was light and cheap.

But it only stayed affordable because I didn’t ignore it. Hit the next button below, because the biggest payoff wasn’t the repair list — it was how the whole backyard started to feel.

What do you think?
