Hack #8: Upgrade a Chain-Link Fence With Slats, Mesh, or Fabric

Start with the cheapest coverage option
Chain-link is functional, but wow, it does almost nothing for privacy. Adding privacy slats, mesh, or fabric panels can turn it into a real barrier without rebuilding.
For an ultra-budget route, even shade cloth can work. Just choose a color that blends with the yard instead of shouting at everybody.
Compare your screening choices
Fence privacy slats look more finished and last longer, while mesh or shade fabric is often cheaper and faster to install. Faux ivy panels look lush but can read a little fake if overused.
For apartment patio privacy or shared yards, fabric screens are often easier to remove later. That matters if you’re dealing with a landlord or HOA.
Make it look intentional
Use dark green, black, or neutral tones for a cleaner look. Pair the fence with planters or living wall privacy elements so it feels styled instead of patched.
I’ve seen chain-link upgrades go from depressing to pretty cute just by adding a few tall pots and string lights nearby. It’s a low bar, but we love progress.
Check the rules first
Shared fences, rental rules, and local codes can get weird. If the fence sits on a property line, make sure your “easy fix” does not create a neighbor issue.
Now, if you want privacy that also grows food and flowers, the next section is one of my favorite combos. Hit that next button below for a smarter, softer screen.
