Hack #11: Repurpose Pallets, Shutters, or Old Doors Into Screens

Hunt for good salvage pieces
Look for pallets, shutters, doors, and old wood panels at reuse centers, salvage yards, yard sales, or neighborhood groups. Some of the best upcycled privacy panels cost next to nothing.
That said, choose pieces with good bones. “Free” gets expensive real fast when the wood is warped, rotten, or full of mystery staples.
Prep them so they last outdoors
Sand rough edges, tighten loose hardware, and seal everything with exterior-grade paint or stain. If you use pallets, confirm they are safe and not chemically treated for hazardous use.
This matters for both durability and safety. Splinters are not the charming rustic detail anybody wants.
Keep the design intentional
Group shutters into repeating panels, hinge doors into a folding screen, or back a pallet wall with planter boxes. A little symmetry goes a long way.
This is where modern backyard screening can meet thrifted materials. With a consistent color palette, even mismatched finds can look styled.
Be picky about placement
Use repurposed screens as an accent wall, a corner blocker, or a divider near seating. They work best in focused spots, not usually as full-perimeter fencing.
If your yard has those weird little peek-through gaps that drive you nuts, the next section is for you. Hit the next button below because tiny gaps can ruin a whole privacy setup.
