Define What Kind of Privacy You Actually Need

Block sightlines, not the whole world
Not every yard needs a full perimeter fence. Sometimes you only need eye-level screening where your neighbors can see straight into your seating area.
That’s why I tell people to stand where they actually sit. Look from the patio table, the grill, the kids’ play area, or the dog run, and mark the view that bugs you most.
Match the solution to the problem
If your issue is a shared side yard, portable fence panels or chain link fence panels with a cover may work. If the problem is a balcony, a balcony privacy screen or apartment patio privacy wrap is usually smarter.
If it’s dog drama, you want lower-level blocking too. If it’s just awkward eye contact during coffee, a planter box screen or lattice privacy panel might be enough.
Measure before you shop
I learned this one the annoying way. I once bought way too much screening for a tiny patio corner because I measured the fence line, not the actual sightline.
Measure the run length, note the height you truly need, and think about wind exposure. In urban backyard privacy setups, a smaller, targeted screen often works better than a giant wall. Hit the next button below, because now we get into one of the easiest renter-friendly setups out there.
