Idea 2: Build a Container Cluster With Citronella, Lemongrass, and Lavender

Why Container Gardening Works So Well
A scented container garden is one of my favorite tricks for child-friendly backyard landscaping and renter spaces. You can move pots where you need them most, which is honestly kind of genius.
This setup also works on balconies, porches, and tiny side yards. No in-ground bed required.
The Best Plant Combo for Fragrance and Style
Try one tall lemongrass plant, one citronella grass, and one or two mounding lavender for mosquitoes accents. That gives you height, texture, and that soft designer look people love right now.
If citronella grass is hard to find, swap in more lemongrass or rosemary. The overall effect still works beautifully.
Sun, Heat, and Water Tips
These plants like full sun and warm weather. Let the top inch of soil dry a bit before watering, because drenched pots can become part of the mosquito problem.
I also skip saucers unless they’re absolutely needed. If you use them, empty them often.
A Realistic Cost Range
Expect about $30 to $60 for a small group, depending on pot style. You can save a lot by using simple terracotta or repurposed porch planters.
This idea is especially good if you want your deck container plants to look polished, not purely functional. Hit the next button below, because now we’re fixing the damp trouble spots mosquitoes adore.
