12 Low-Maintenance Brick Border Layouts to Stop Grass From Spreading

Circular Tree Ring Brick Border

Why tree rings save so much effort

A circular brick border around a tree cuts down on that annoying mower dance where you’re trying not to scalp roots or bump the trunk. It also creates a cleaner, safer area for mulch.

This is one of those simple changes that makes yard maintenance feel easier right away. Less trimming around the base of a tree is always a win.

How to build it without harming the tree

Keep the ring wide enough to be useful, but don’t pile mulch against the trunk. Please skip the mulch volcano thing, because it traps moisture and can stress the tree over time.

I also work carefully around surface roots. If roots are prominent, I’d rather adjust the circle slightly than hack away at something the tree needs.

Where else this layout works

This same round-border idea works around birdbaths, fountains, lamp posts, and other focal points. It gives a feature its own visual “room” in the landscape.

For best balance, make the ring proportional to the object. A tiny ring around a big mature tree usually looks stingy, and yeah, I said what I said.

If your hardest area is where the lawn meets concrete, hit the next button below, because tying brick into a driveway or sidewalk is a game changer.
