2. Vertical Clematis Climbing Walls
I used to stare out my kitchen window at this incredibly ugly, bare cinderblock wall that basically made my entire yard feel like a prison courtyard.
I desperately wanted to cover it up with lush, romantic greenery, but the dirt at the base was practically pure, unadulterated chalk. I figured there was zero chance anything delicate or beautiful would survive in it, let alone have the energy to climb.
Turns out, I was completely wrong about one of the absolute best climbing plants for walls in existence.
The Magic of Cool Roots and Sunlit Vines
Here is a gardening secret that completely blew my mind: Clematis actually loves alkaline, chalky soil.
In the wild, these stunners naturally grow in rocky, limestone-rich areas where their roots stay cool and shaded, while their delicate vines fiercely reach up for the bright sun. If you are dealing with a tiny yard, utilizing vertical gardening ideas like this is an absolute game-changer.
Instead of letting wide, bushy shrubs eat up your precious patio space, you simply draw the eye upward with massive, vibrant blooms.
All you have to do is plant your growing clematis directly into that chalky border. Then, just place a few decorative terracotta pots or some low-growing leafy greens right over the base to act as an umbrella, keeping those roots perfectly chilled.
Securing Your Upward Oasis
Once you know the roots are happily settled in the chalk, you just need to give those wandering vines something sturdy to grab onto.
For a super clean, modern aesthetic, I highly recommend installing a simple grid of thin, galvanized steel wire directly against your brick or wood fencing. It is practically invisible from a distance, which makes the bright flowers look like they are magically floating up the side of your house.
You can also lean a beautiful, vintage-style wooden trellis right into those awkward, ultra-narrow garden borders.
Just be sure to gently tie the newest, fragile green shoots to the wood with a bit of soft twine until they finally figure out how to climb on their own.
Now, once your ugly walls are completely hidden by gorgeous climbing blooms, we need to tackle the flat, boring ground beneath them, so hit the next button below because we are about to design a stunning, ultra-low-maintenance gravel space.
