1. The Mediterranean Courtyard Escape
A few years back, my wife and I tried to turn our tiny, sun-baked patio into this delicate, English-style garden.
With four kids constantly running around and bouncing soccer balls off the walls, I probably should have known better, but the real killer was the soil. The alkaline dirt basically fried every soft, leafy thing we planted, leaving us with a very expensive, completely dead pile of twigs.
That was the exact moment I realized I needed to stop fighting the heat and the chalk, and actually lean entirely into a small garden design meant for the Mediterranean.
Baking in the Sun (and Loving It)
Here is a brilliant little secret about chalky soil plants: that high pH actually stresses certain aromatic herbs in the best way possible.
When plants like lavender, rosemary, and oregano are forced to grow in lean, chalky dirt, they panic just enough to massively boost their essential oil production. That means your aromatic herb garden will literally smell stronger and taste significantly better than if it was planted in rich, heavy compost.
You can easily tuck a gorgeous dwarf olive tree or some creeping thyme right into those tight, sun-drenched urban corners where absolutely nothing else wants to survive.
Styling Your Urban Oasis
Once you have your resilient plants locked in, the fun part is actually designing the space to feel like a high-end retreat.
I absolutely love using oversized terracotta pots to create instant warmth, mixing those earthy orange tones with the cool, silvery-greens of a classic Mediterranean garden. It is such a clean, upscale aesthetic that immediately makes a tiny urban courtyard feel like a boutique hotel.
Plus, lifting some of those plants into pots gives your yard some much-needed height and structure without taking up precious square footage.
Speaking of going vertical, if you have some ugly brick walls or bare fences you desperately need to hide, you are going to completely obsess over the next idea, so hit that next button below and let’s talk about climbing vines.
