4. Break the Rules with an Oversized Outdoor Rug

A few summers ago, I found this gorgeous, brightly patterned 3×5 rug on super clearance and slapped it right in the middle of my patio. I thought it would look like a cute little island of color for my two chairs.
Instead, it looked exactly like a sad little bath mat lost in a giant sea of gray concrete. It completely ruined the vibe.
The “Postage Stamp” Mistake
One of the biggest blunders in small yard landscaping is buying what I call a “postage stamp” rug. We naturally think that a tiny space requires a tiny rug to match.
But laying down a small rug just visually chops up your already limited floor space. It creates a harsh, distracting border right in the middle of your seating area.
When your eye stops at the edge of a tiny rug, your brain assumes the usable room stops there, too. It is the absolute worst thing you can do if you want your outdoor living space to feel expansive.
Pushing the Boundaries Outward
So, you need to totally break the rules and buy a massive outdoor rug. You want a rug so big that the front legs of every single piece of furniture easily sit right on top of it.
Covering almost the entire patio floor with one large, cohesive pattern magically pushes your visual boundaries outward. It acts like a giant, comfortable room without walls.
Suddenly, that cramped slab of concrete feels like a luxurious, full-sized outdoor dining area or lounge. It is seriously the fastest, cheapest optical illusion in the book.
And speaking of cheap tricks that make a huge impact, you are not going to believe what a few extra bulbs can do, so hit the next button below because we are about to completely rethink how you layer your backyard lighting.
