4. Densely Packed “Jungle” Pots

I still cringe when I think about the gorgeous, oversized Fiddle Leaf Fig I brought home a few years ago for my patio corner.
I planted it in a massive terracotta pot, leaving a huge, inviting ring of soft, freshly watered potting mix around the base.
Less than 48 hours later, I walked outside to find that Luna had proudly decided this was her brand new luxury en-suite bathroom.
It was a messy, frustrating disaster, but it taught me a crucial rule about gardening with pets: bare dirt is always an invitation.
Eliminating the Bare Soil Invitation
To a feline brain, a wide open expanse of soft potting soil is literally just a giant litter box waiting to be used.
If you want to effectively stop cats from digging in pots, you have to completely eliminate that visual trigger.
My absolute favorite trick is to use heavy river rocks in potted plants to create a stunning, impenetrable barrier.
You just layer these large, smooth stones completely over the top of the soil, making it physically impossible for them to scratch or dig.
Not only does it create highly effective dig proof planters, but the heavy rocks actually help retain moisture in your soil during hot summer afternoons.
The Art of the Living Mulch
If you don’t love the look of heavy stones, you can achieve the exact same result by packing your pots like a dense jungle.
This is where the magic of cat friendly ground cover totally saves the day in a tight space.
By planting low-growing, pet-safe succulents or creeping thyme tightly around the base of your taller plants, you leave zero room for a litter-box conversion.
When a pot is absolutely overflowing with foliage, they simply can’t find a spot to comfortably squat, so they just move on to greener pastures.
Stopping them from using your soil as a toilet is a massive win, but what do you do when they start crushing your delicate ferns just to find a cool spot to nap? Hit the next button below because I’m going to show you how to weave built-in shade sanctuaries right into your plant canopy.
