#1 – Monstera Deliciosa (Swiss Cheese Plant)
If there’s one plant that screams “indoor jungle,” it’s the magnificent Monstera deliciosa. I’ll never forget the day I brought home my first tiny Monstera with just three leaves. Five years later, it’s now the stunning centerpiece of my living room, reaching over six feet tall with those gorgeous fenestrated leaves that everyone dreams about!
Why Monstera Deliciosa Rules the Indoor Jungle
The Swiss Cheese Plant isn’t just popular because it’s Instagram-worthy (though it definitely is!). What makes this tropical beauty truly special is its ability to create instant jungle vibes with those dramatic, split leaves. The plant’s natural growth pattern mimics exactly what you’d see in a tropical rainforest, making it perfect for creating that wild, jungle aesthetic indoors.
I’ve found that Monstera deliciosa is also surprisingly forgiving for such a dramatic plant. Trust me, mine has survived some serious rookie mistakes, including that time I forgot about it for three weeks during vacation (don’t do that, though!).
Mastering Light and Water Requirements
Here’s what took me way too long to figure out – Monsteras love bright, indirect light but will literally tell you when they’re unhappy with their light situation. If the splits in new leaves are smaller or non-existent, your plant is saying “I need more light!” I learned this the hard way when my first Monstera produced three solid leaves with no fenestrations.
When it comes to watering, I follow what I call the knuckle test rule:
- Stick your finger up to the second knuckle in the soil
- Water thoroughly only when it feels dry at that depth
- Always ensure proper drainage to prevent root rot
Supporting Your Growing Monster
Nobody told me how fast these plants can grow! My biggest tip? Set up your support system before you desperately need it. I use a moss pole that I can extend as the plant grows. Here’s what I’ve learned about support:
- Moss poles are better than plain stakes because they mimic natural growing conditions
- Aerial roots will actually attach to and climb the moss pole
- The bigger the leaves get, the more support they’ll need
Popular Varieties Worth Considering
While the standard Monstera deliciosa is amazing, there are some varieties that make fantastic additions:
- Thai Constellation: Those gorgeous white variegations (my dream plant!)
- Albo Borsigiana: Stunning white sectoral variegation
- Deliciosa ‘Borsigiana’: A slightly smaller, faster-growing variety
- Form borsigiana aurea: The rare golden variegated form
Propagation: Making More Monsteras
Propagating Monstera is literally like printing free plants! I’ve successfully propagated over 10 plants from my original Monstera, and here’s what works best:
- Look for a node (the bumpy part where leaves emerge)
- Cut below the node with clean, sharp shears
- Place in water or damp moss until roots develop
- Transfer to soil when roots are 3-4 inches long
